Work Stressors and How to Handle Them

General levels of stress in the workplace are heading in the wrong direction. Here are five common work stressors and thoughts on how to handle them:

1. Misalignment between you and the job: Your core values need to align with your company's. Once those values are compromised, stress is hard to keep at bay.

2. Lack of purpose and meaning: Find a job that is worth doing, or identify some meaningful aspect - that's what builds resilience when things get tough.

3. Pressure of workload: A never-ending heavy workload wears you down mentally and physically - especially if you lack skills, time, or don't enjoy the work.

4. Lack of control: Identify the aspects of your job you can control and take control. Don't waste mental resource fretting over things you can't.

5. Failing to look after mind and body: Exercise regularly, socialise, sleep well, eat and drink healthily. These habits build the resilience to deal with stress.

Points 1 and 2 are strategic - finding the right job in the first place reduces stress at source. Points 3, 4, and 5 are what you manage day to day once you're there.
